Pronunciación¶
Spanish pronunciation of the Rosary follows standard Spanish, with attention to the steady rhythm of prayer.
For native English speakers, the biggest adjustments are the five pure vowels and a few consonant rules. Spanish is syllable-timed: each syllable gets roughly equal time, producing the calm, flowing pace heard in the Ave María and the Padre Nuestro.
Phonemes¶
Vowels are short and clear, without the glides common in English.
Vowels
- a sounds like the a in "father"
- e like the e in "bed"
- i like the ee in "see"
- o like the o in "for" (short)
- u like the oo in "boot"
Consonants that differ
- c before e/i and z: "s" in most of Latin America, "th" as in "think" in Spain. In the Ave María, "gracia" is GRAH-syah or GRAH-thyah.
- ll and most y: like the y in "yes." "Llena eres" begins YEH-nah EH-rehs.
- rr or r at the beginning of a word: a light trill. "Reina" in the Salve Regina starts with a rolled r.
- j (and g before e/i): a soft h sound. "Jesús" is heh-SOOS.
- h is always silent.
Word stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable. An accent mark shows when it falls elsewhere.
The best practice is to listen repeatedly to native speakers praying the full Rosary. Each prayer page here includes audio for every passage.

Recomendaciones¶
These are approaches that I have found the most useful, and would recommend to anyone learning Spanish.
Michel Thomas; the Spanish beginner course is fantastic, and it helped me with the most difficult parts of Spanish.
Spanish flashcards; hand-made are the best, although as a web or mobile app they can record timing and do a better job at spaced-repetition patterns to aid memorization and automaticity.
No Recomendado¶
Avoid influencers and language blogs that promote fast fluency -- this is toxic garbage that will destroy any real progress. See bad advice.
